Wild or domesticated, fierce or playful, cats have fascinated humans since antiquity. This obsession is reflected in the key roles cats have played in countless cultures. Most modern domestic cats are descendants of the cats of ancient Egypt. Large numbers of mummified cats were buried in the Late Period, and bronze statuettes of cats were dedicated to temples during religious festivals.
