Seurat and the Making of La Grande Jatte

Seurat and the Making of La Grande Jatte
"Bedlam," "scandal," and "hilarity" were among the epithets used to describe the effect of what is now considered Georges Seurat's greatest work, and one of the most remarkable paintings of the nineteenth century, when it was first exhibited in Paris in 1886. "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte--1884, "an extensive landscape peopled with over forty figures, took the artist almost two years to complete. Inspired by research in optical and color theory, Seurat juxtaposed tiny dots of colors on the canvas that form a single and more brilliantly luminous hue in the viewer's eye. This sumptuous book, created to accompany a major exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, provides a fascinating, in-depth examination of the gestation, execution, and influence of Seurat's masterpiece. "La Grande Jatte "has been part of the Art Institute of Chicago's collection since 1926. Bringing together all known studies and drawings directly related to the painting, this volume provides a visual and contextual survey of Seurat's working methods and aesthetic priorities, as well as the evolutionary process that culminated in his singular achievement. Included are more than fifty-five prepartory works, ranging from rich conte crayon drawings to oil sketches on small wood panels to larger studies painted on canvas. In their quantity, intricacy, and variety, these works reveal a compositional process that harks back to Old Master traditions and methods, which had been largely abandoned by Seurat's immediate predecessors, the Impressionists. The many studies attest to the artist's ambitions for his masterpiece and open up a broader context for understanding the painting. Robert L. Herbert, who has writtenextensively on the artist, traces Seurat's beginnings in the context of Barbizon painting and Impressionism.

For the Love of Steam by Donald Weston,
For the Love of Steam by Donald Weston,
While many artists have portrayed the steam era on canvas, David Weston was one of the few who realized the necessity of using art to make a record of this nostalgic means of transportation -- before it was too late! In this stunning collection of sketches and oil paintings on canvas, Weston captures the last vestiges of an era with passion and reverence. He beautifully preserves the mighty steam trains, humble industrial locomotives, and ponderous road engines of yesterday. With special attention paid to technical accuracy, For the Love of Steam makes the perfect gift for every locomotive buff or steam era enthusiast.

Shaped canvas - Shaped canvas paintings are done on canvas in a shape other than the traditional rectangle. This may be more traditionally done by creating a different edge form and retaining a flat painting surface, as in a rondo made on a circular stretcher or panel, or less traditionally by moving the surface by stuffing or padding the surface, or stretching the canvas across a shaped stretcher.

The Art of Painting - The Art of Painting, also known as The Allegory of Painting, Die Allegorie der Malerei or Painter in his Studio, is a famous 17th century oil on canvas painting by Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer. Many art experts believe that the work of art is an allegory of painting, hence the alternate title of the painting.

Panel painting - A Panel painting was a painting support medium in popular use in the West for about 300 years, from the late 12th century until the 16th century, after which canvas and oil paint became the norm. A "panel" was created from wood with a chalk mixture layered on top to form a solid, smooth surface, not unlike ivory, and was then painted using an egg-yolk based paint.
