Dictionary of Women Artists: 2 Volumes by Delia Gaze,

Dictionary of Women Artists: 2 Volumes by Delia Gaze,
From Kauffman to Kollwitz, Ende to Edelson, Abakanowicz to Zurn, from the 10th century to the 20th, from Australia to Eastern Europe, Scandinavia to Latin America, England and France to the United States and Canada, the Dictionary of Women Artists provides information about some 550 painters, sculptors, and photographers as well as women whose work is in the applied arts. The book deals with women who have worked or are working in the Western tradition of art, and its emphasis is historical -- an attempt to announce and explain the contribution of women to the fine arts, from the medieval period to the present time. Each artist-entry is illustrated and consists of a biography (with an exhibition list where appropriate), a primary and secondary bibliography (including important early sources, "breakthrough" articles, and the modern literature), and a signed interpretive essay by one of several hundred art historians from around the world. The essays both concentrate on the artist's work and attempt to place it in an historical context; specific works are discussed that exemplify the artist's style and activity. A series of introductory surveys focus on the training and the conditions of work for women artists. The Dictionary of Women Artists is truly a ground-breaking work in both art history and women's studies. It not only celebrates the accomplishments of well-known women artists but also introduces important women artists who until now have been, at best, neglected in standard art history texts or, at worst, consigned to a kind of permanent obscurity.

Irish art - The early history of Irish visual art is generally considered to begin with early carvings found at sites such as Newgrange and is traced through Bronze Age artefacts, particularly ornamental gold objects, and the religious carvings and illuminated manuscripts of the medieval period. During the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, a strong indigenous tradition of painting emerged, including such figures as John Butler Yeats, William Orpen and Jack Yeats.

Medieval art - Medieval art covers a vast scope of time and place, over 1000 years of art history in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. It includes major art movements and periods, national and regional art, genres, revivals, the artists crafts, and the artists themselves.

Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art - The Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art is a laboratory at the University of Oxford which develops and applies scientific methods to the study of the past.
